(a) whether the Government have reviewed the birth rate and infant mortality rate in the country;

As per the Sample Registration System (SRS) 2000, the Crude Birth Rate (CBR) is 25.8 per thousand population and Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is 68 per thousand live births in the country. State-wise CBR and IMR is annexed.

The Government of India, Department of Family Welfare has already initiated various steps to bring down the Infant Mortality. The most recent initiative is Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) Programme launched in 1997 in all States/UTs. Under this Programme, immunization against six vaccine preventable diseases, facilities for appropriate management of acute respiratory infections, Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT) for management of diarrhoeal diseases and essential newborn care services are provided. Promotion of exclusive breastfeeding and appropriate complementary feeding practices, and prophylaxis against Vitamin -A and iron deficiencies are also provided to improve the nutritional status of children. It includes all the components of child survival and safe motherhood.


The target for IMR by the end of Tenth Plan (2007) is 45 per thousand live births.
