Question : INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY



(a) whether India has requested the United Nations (UN) to declare a day in a year as ‘International Yoga Day’;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether a number of countries have supported this suggestion made by India and if so, the details thereof; and

(d) the reaction of the UN thereto?

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS [GEN. (DR) V. K. SINGH (RETD)]

(a) to (d) Hon’ble Prime Minister, during his address at the 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 27 September 2014, had called upon the international community to declare an International Day of Yoga.

Subsequently, a Draft Resolution was tabled in the UNGA by India and other co-sponsors to declare 21 June as the International Day of Yoga. The response of the international community has been very positive. The Draft Resolution had 167 co-sponsors as on 27 November 2014.
