Question : Minority Status

(a) the details of the communities accorded minority status by the Government so far;
(b) whether any demand has been received by the Government from any community for according minority status and if so, the details and the dates on which such demands were received;
(c) the details of the provisions made by the Government to accord minority status;
(d) whether there is any provision/proposal under consideration to abolish this status of minority community and if so, the details thereof;
(e) whether growing minority population has been reviewed; and
(f) if so, the time by which it is likely to be done and if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) to (c) Central Government notifies minority communities in consultation with various stakeholders under Section 2 (c) of National Commission for Minorities (NCM) Act, 1992. The Central Government has so far notified six communities namely Christians, Sikhs, Muslims, Buddhists, Jains and Parsis as Minority communities. Proposals for grant of minority status, as and when received are considered by Ministry of Minority Affairs as per provisions of the NCM Act, 1992.
(d) to (f) At present, there is no such proposal under consideration with the Ministry of Minority Affairs.
