Question : STATUS OF INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT



(a) the criteria adopted for giving any airport the status of an International Airport;

(b) the names of airports which were given the status of International Airports during the last three years;

(c) whether the Government propose to declare some more airports as international airports;

(d) whether all the international airports so declared have all the facilities required for such airports; and

(e) if not, the steps taken to provide such facilities in such airports which lack them at present?

STATEMENT IN REPLY TO PARTS (a), (b), (c), (d) & (e) OF LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO.311 FOR ANSWER ON 19.03.2001 REGARDING STATUS OF INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT :

(a) :- Adequate demand for international operations, facilities for customs, immigrations & health, and a minimum runway length of 9000 feet with suitable terminal facilities are the main criteria for declaring an airport as international.

(b) :- Airports at Bangalore, Goa, Hyderabad, Guwahati, Amritsar, Ahmedabad and new Cochin airport at Nedumbassery have been declared as international airports in last three years.

(c) :- There is no plan, at present, to declare more airports as international.

(d) & (e) :- All the international airports, except Guwahati airport have the minimum facilities required for international airports. Guwahati airport does not have Customs and Immigration facilities which could be provided as and when the airlines start international operations.
