Question : PRODUCTION OF MILK AND MILK PRODUCTS



(a) the production of milk and milk products, indicating demands and supply, State-wise during 1997-98, 1998-99,1999-2000;

(b) whether price of milk has also increased in all States with the increase in its production;

(c) if so, the average price of milk in the country at present;

(d) whether the price of milk is beyond the reach of most of the people, particularly population living below the poverty line;

(e) if so, whether the Government have any proposal for setting up innovative dairy projects during 2000-2001;

(f) if so, the details thereof; and

(g) the steps being taken by the Government for modernisation of dairy units in the country ?

(a): Production and requirement of milk, State wise during 1997-98 and 1998-99 is given at Annex -I. Data for 1999-2000 is not available. Production of major milk products in the cooperative sector during the years 1997-98 to 1999-2000, State-wise is given at Annex - II. `

(b) & (c): The consumer price of milk marketed by tlie co-operative sector in some of the major cities in India are as follows:-

(d): The milk production in India is overwhelmingly dominated by small, marginal and landless farmers. About 50% of rural milk produced is retained at house hold level. Such retention of rural milk production is utilised in the form of liquid milk and converted into household base milk products by small, marginal and landless fanners including the poor families based in the rural India.

(e) to (g): Dairying is a state subject. However Government of India supports the efforts of the State Governments/UTs for increasing the niilk production. The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying has been implementing the following schemes for milk production and infrastructure development during the 9th Plan.
(a) National Project on Cattle Breeding	(b) Assistance to States for Fodder Development	(c) Assistance to States for Control of Animal Diseases	(d) National Project on Rinderpest Eradication	(e) Assistance to Cooperatives	(f) Integrated Dairy Development Project
