(a): Yes. The preliminary data on National Health Portal on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) indicates prevalence of this syndrome ranging from 2.2% to 26% among adolescents. The observational studies indicate urbanisation and change of lifestyle, as one of the reasons for this.
(b) & (c): Government of India through Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has launched a large-scale representative country vide epidemiological multicentric study on PCOS, titled ‘Evaluation of prevalence, regional phenotypic variation, co-morbidities, risk factor and the variations, in response to different therapeutic modalities among Indian Woman with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): A Multicentre study across India”. Phase II of this study will make understand the risk factors/causes of PCOS among Indians with links to Diabetes, for devising nationwide strategy to prevent and treat the condition successfully.
(d): No information is available on invention of such a vaccine.
(e): Recognizing the growing problem of PCOS, ICMR- NIRRH, Mumbai established a multidisciplinary clinic for PCOS in 2016, where girls and women with PCOS are given holistic management with a multidisciplinary team of specialists namely dermatologists, dietician, yoga expert, endocrinologist, gynaecologist, psychiatrist and IVF expert to address various problems faced by PCOS women,. The patients are also counselled on diet and Yoga demonstration is done so that women can practice the same at home. They are also followed up at frequent intervals.
Recently a project has been initiated with support from SATYAM (DST) to assess the Effect of Yoga on physical and emotional wellbeing of infertile women with PCOS.
A team of likeminded institutes in Mumbai working towards the cause of PCOS (ICMR NIRRH, MRC Kasturba Health Society, Tata Institute Social Sciences and PCOS Society of India) have come together to form a consortium named as ABHIYAAN PCOS with the objective to improve awareness and sensitize health providers and community on the issue of PCOS.
The investigators involved in the ongoing phase-I of PCOS study are periodically conducting awareness camps and PCOS workshops for creating awareness among young and adult women across the country.
