Question : NUMBER OF OPERATIONAL AIRCRAFTS



(a) number of Aircrafts owned and in operation in respect of Indian Airlines, Air India and other Private operators;

(b) whether the Indian Airlines and Air India are making profit at present; and

(c) if not, the remedial steps proposed to be taken by the Government?

(a):- Indian Airlines has a fleet of 54 aircraft in operation, out of which 46 are owned and 8 are on operating lease. Air India has a fleet of 30 aircraft, out of which 8 are on dry lease. All the aircraft are in operation. Jet Airways owns 40 aircraft, of which 39 are in operation. There are 10 aircraft owned by Sahara Airlines, all of which are in operation.

(b) and (c):- During the year 2001-02, Air India made a profit of Rs.15.44 crores. However, Indian Airlines is not making profit at present. Some of the remedial steps taken by Indian Airlines in improving its financial and operating performance are:-

(i) Comprehensive budgetary control system;
(ii) Cost benefit analysis;
(iii) Introduction of `Flexi Fare Policy`;
(iv) Fare increase;
(v) Better fleet & other resource utilisation;
(vi) Improvement in quality of products/consumer services;
(vii) Marketing initiatives; and
(viii) Cost Control and economy measures.
