Answer given by the minister

THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR POWER, COAL, NEW & RENEWABLE ENERGY AND MINES (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) (SHRI PIYUSH GOYAL)

(a): The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) supported about 259 MW grid connected / captive power plants using Urban, Industrial and Agricultural Wastes / Residues including Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). The present share of these Waste to Energy power generation projects is around 0.08% in the total installed power generation capacity in the country.

(b) & (c): MNRE is providing Central Financial Assistance (CFA) for setting up of Waste to Energy projects based on Urban, Industrial and Agricultural Wastes / Residues including MSW. In addition, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is implementing “Swachh Bharat Mission” (SBM) which also provides support for setting up of waste to energy plants up to 35% of the project cost in the form of Viability Gap Funding (VGF) / grant, subject to the overall state-wise funds envelop for SBM. The details of CFA provided by MNRE and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs under SBM during the last there years and the current year, State/UTs wise are given at Annexure-I & II.

(d) to (f): Presently, five projects of 66.4 MW are operational and generating power from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and running successfully in Solapur, Maharashtra; Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh; and New Delhi, which are able to process about 4516 Tons MSW per day. The State/UT-wise details of these operational plants with installed capacity and quantity of MSW utilized / processed are given at Annexure-III. Under SBM, 48 MSW based plants with cumulative installed capacity of 412.5 MW are under construction. Details of these projects are given at Annexure-IV.
