Question : Desalination Plants at Major Ports

(a) whether the Government proposes to install plants at three Major Ports- Paradip, Ennore and Chidambaranar- to recycle and desalinate sea water into potable water;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c) the details of the expenditure estimated to be incurred on these plants; and
(d) the extent to which the demand for drinking water can be met along with the details of areas likely to benefit as a result thereof?

Answer given by the minister

(a) & (b) Yes, Madam. Desalination plants are proposed to be installed at Paradip (Odisha), Kamarajar (Ennore, Tamilnadu) and V.O. Chidambaranar (Thoothukudi, Tamilnadu) ports with installed capacity of 10 Million Litre Per Day (MLD), 1 MLD and 5 MLD respectively.
(c) To prepare feasibility report of the proposed desalination plants consultants are being appointed by the respective ports. The estimates of the cost involved in setting up of the plants would be known after the feasibility report is available.
(d) With the setting up of the proposed plants potable water demand of the 3 ports and nearby villages would also be met.
