Question : DAM ON MAHANADI RIVER



(a) whether the Government have taken any steps to construct any dam over Mahanadi river of Orissa to control the recurring floods in Mahanadi river causing serious damages to the people, land and habitations in the delta areas in the down stream of Hirakud Dam in reverence to the statement of Hon’ble Prime Minister in Orissa while visiting the flood affected areas of the State; and

(b) if so, the details thereof and by when the same is likely to be done?

(a) & (b) Planning, investigation and execution of the schemes related to flood management is the primary responsibility of the State Governments and these schemes are generally funded by the State Governments from the annual plan funds provided to the State Governments by the Planning Commission under flood control sector. As reported by the State Government, the State has not submitted a detailed project report of dam over Mahanadi down stream of Hirakud to control floods in Mahanadi for techno-economic appraisal to Central Water Commission.
