Question : PREVENTION OF MAJOR AILMENTS



(a) whether the brain stroke is one among the most killer disease in the world and there are large number of brain stroke patients in the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government has conducted any survey regarding the number of patients becoming the victims of this disease;

(d) if so, the details thereof;

(e) whether the Union Government is planning to start a National Programme to prevent diabetes, heart disease and brain stroke;

(f) if so, the details thereof;

(g) whether the Government plans to introduce this programme in all districxt hospitals of the country;

(h) if not the reasons therefor;

(i) whether the Government proposes to conduct any awareness programme to control such disease; and

(j) if so, the steps taken/ proposed to be taken by the Government in this regard?

(a)to (j): According to NIMHANS, brain stroke is the third leading cause of death in the world. No national level epidemiological survey on brain stroke has been conducted in India. A number of community based epidemiological studies have, however, been carried out in different part of the country. As per these studies, the prevalence rate of brain stroke varies from 210 per lakh to over 700 per lakh population.

It is proposed to launch a National Programme for Prevention and Control of Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke during the XIth Five Year Plan with focus on increasing public awareness.The pilot phase of this Programme has been launched in selected districts of six States in the current year.
