Question : PREMIUM PRICE FOR TURMERIC



(a) whether turmeric growers in the North-East face lack of premium price for their produce, resulting in post-harvest losses;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government is contemplating to offer turmeric farmers a premium price by setting up of processing units in various parts of the region with the help of entrepreneurs and industry people; and

(d) if so, the details thereof?

The Department of Agriculture and Cooperation is implementing Centrally Sponsored Schemes, “Horticulture Mission for North East and Himalayan States” for the holistic development of horticulture including turmeric in the country. Under this scheme, assistance is provided for setting up of new processing units upto the project cost of Rs.800 lakhs with credit linked back ended capital investment assistance of 50% of cost.

The Spices Board of India under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry is also implementing schemes for organic production, post harvest management, quality improvement and processing of turmeric.
