Question : Study on Eutrophication

Will the Minister of CHEMICALS AND FERTILIZERS be please to state:

(a) whether any study on Eutrophication has been conducted in India, if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor;

(b) the details of the areas where this problem is primarily seen; and

(c) the details of the role of agriculture in eutrophication of surface water and ground water?

(a) to (c): No study on eutrophication in wetlands, lakes or rivers of the country has been sponsored/ undertaken under the National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Eco-systems or National River Conservation Plan of Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change.

Eutrophication, a common phenomenon occurring in water bodies, is a response of ecosystem to the addition of artificial or natural nutrients, mainly phosphates and nitrates, through detergents, fertilizers, sewage, etc.
