Question : ABANDONING CLOSURE OF COAL MINES



(a) the details of the coal mines abandoned/closed in the country including Jharkhand during the last three years and the current year and the coal mines which are likely to be closed after exhaustion of coal in them, State-wise;

(b) the quantum of loss in production of coal as a result of abandoning/closure of those mines and the quantum of loss likely to be lost due to such abandoning/closures in future;

(c) the steps taken/proposed to be taken by the Government to compensate these losses/reduction in production of coal;

(d) whether any contingency plan has been prepared by the Government to explore and operate new mining areas so that there is no deficiency in supply of coal to thermal power plants; and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

(b to e) : Every year, some mines are closed / abandoned / discontinued due to exhaustion of reserves, safety and economic viability. To compensate this loss and augment the production, new projects are opened from time to time and capacity of ongoing projects is enhanced, wherever feasible.
