Question : PRODUCTION CAPACITY OF IRON ORE MINES



(a) whether measures have been initiated by the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) to augment production capacity of iron ore mines;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the extent to which the production of iron ore has increased due to the steps taken by SAIL?

(a)&(b): Yes, Madam. The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is implementing its growth plan to raise the production capacity of its iron ore mines to cater to expanded steel production. This is planned to be met by expansion of capacity of existing mines at Kiriburu, Meghahatuburu and Gua in Jharkhand, Bolani, Barsua and Kalta in Orissa and also by developing new mines at Chiria in Jharkhand, Rowghat in Chhattisgarh and Taldih and Thakurani in Orissa.

(c) The expansion of operating mines and development of new mines are in the various stages of implementation. The increased production of iron ore will be in line with the increase in hot metal production capacity.
