(a) whether the Railways are aware that people of North-Eastern Region have been demanding
bifurcation of Alipurduar Zone and creation of a new zone with Maligaon and Dibrugarh Railway
Division ;
(b) if so, the details thereof and the time by which the said zone is likely to be created;
and
(c) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a): Yes, Sir.
(b) & (c): The issue has been raised in a memorandum handed over by all Congress Members of
Parliament from Assam State to Hon’ble Prime Minister.
Indian Railway does not have any Zone namely, Alipurduar Zone. Hence the question of any
bifurcation of Alipurduar Zone does not arise. Moreover, a Zonal Railway namely, “Northeast
Frontier Railway†with headquarters at Guwahati already exists to cater to the needs of the
region.
