Question : Medical Device Sector



Will the Minister of CHEMICALS AND FERTILIZERS be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Government is planning/proposing to delink the Medical Device Sector from the Pharma Sector in the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;

(c) the details of the funds likely to be earmarked and sanctioned for this sector;

(d) the details of the targets likely to be fixed for this sector; and

(e) the time by which the proposal is likely to be implemented?

(a to e): Considering the fact that Medical Devices are different in nature from drugs, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has notified separate rules for Medical Devices on 31.01.2017 under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. The new Rules seek to remove regulatory bottlenecks to Make in India, facilitate ease of doing business while ensuring availability of better medical devices for patient care and safety. As a measure to promote the Medical Device Sector, the Department of Pharmaceuticals has a proposal for a scheme for “Development of Common Facilitation Centre for Medical Devices” under the umbrella scheme for “Development of Pharmaceuticals Industry”. However, funds have not yet been allocated for the proposed scheme.
