Question : NEW DAMS FOR UTILIZATION OF FLOOD WATER



(a) whether due to floods in many parts of the country lots of water flows waste into sea;

(b) if so, whether for utilization of said water the Government has any proposal to construct new dams and reservoirs; and

(c) if so, the details thereof ?

THE MINISTER OF STATE (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) FOR HEAVEY INDUSTRIES, PUBLIC ENTERPRISES AND WATER RESOURCES (SHRI SONTOSH MOHAN DEV)

(a) Floods are caused mainly as a result of intense rainfall in the catchment. About 75% of rainfall occurs during monsoon period (June to October) with a considerable part from a few spells of intense rainfall. Considerable part of the flood water flows down to sea. `

(b) & (c) State Governments conceive, plan and implement major, medium & minor schemes for utilisation of water resources. Storage capacity of about 213 Billion Cubic Metre (BCM) has been created so far. As per present assessment, the total estimated storage capacity of the various projects under construction is about 76 BCM and that for the projects under formulation is about 108 BCM.
