Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE (SHRI HUKUMDEO NARAYAN YADAV)

(a) to (d): According to the estimates made by the Central Statistical Organisation, the contribution of the sector consisting of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Forestry and Fishing in the Net Domestic Product (NDP) in the rural areas at current prices for the years 1970-71 and 1993-94 were 72.4 percent and 56.1 percent respectively. Since these estimates are prepared only for the base years of the National Accounts Series and the current series has the base year 1993-94, a similar percentage contribution of the sector for the year 2000-01 is not available. Decline in the contribution of agriculture in the rural economy is on account of higher growth rate in the non-agricultural sectors.
