Question : Regulation of Legal Profession



(a) whether the Government is aware of any direction from the Supreme Court of India to the Law Commission of India to review/examine all the relevant issues regarding regulation of legal profession particularly in view of declining standards and increasing intolerance in the legal profession in the country;
(b) if so, the details thereof along with the reaction of the Law Commission/Government thereto;
(c) the measures taken/being taken by the Government to bring reforms in legal education to curb inefficiency in the profession; and
(d) the other steps taken/being taken by the Government to improve the quality of legal education/profession in the country?

(a) and (b) : Yes, Madam. The present Law Commission of India has received a letter dated 11.07.2016 from the Supreme Court of India along with a copy of order dated 05.07.2016 passed in Criminal Appeal No. 63 of 2006 in the matter of Mahipal Singh Rana, Advocate Vs. State of U.P. The said letter along with copy of the order dated 05.07.2016 is yet to be placed before the Chairman, Law Commission of India.

(c) and (d) : The Government will take appropriate action after receiving the report from the Law Commission of India.
