Question : Cross Border Smuggling

(a) the number of cases of smuggling of drugs, weapons, animals and fake currency reported along with the quantum of smuggled items seized during each of the last three years and the current year, item, border-wise and State-wise;

(b) the number of smugglers arrested and killed in the said cases;

(c) whether the Government has identified the sources of the said cases of smuggling;

(d) if so, the details thereof and the follow-up action taken thereon; and

(e) the comprehensive measures taken by the Government to ensure better security at the borders to prevent smuggling of the said items at the borders?

(a) & (b): The number of cases of smuggling of drugs, weapons, animals and fake currency reported along with the quantum of smuggled items seized during each of the last three years and the current year, item, border-wise and State-wise are at Annexure.

(c) & (d): Sources of smuggling in many cases have been identified and information is being shared with concerned agencies of India and counterpart countries during various meetings as follow-up action.

(e): The following remedial steps have been taken to stop cross border crimes from the neighbouring countries :
(i) Erection of Border fencing and floodlighting along the International Border (IB).
(ii) Effective domination of the borders by the Border Guarding Forces by carrying out round the clock surveillance of the border viz. patrolling, laying nakas, establishing of observation posts all along the IB and strengthening of existing defences of the BOPs.
(iii) Vulnerability mapping of BOPs from the point of view of cross border crimes and being strengthened by deploying additional manpower, special surveillance equipments, vehicles and other infrastructure support.
(iv) Use of water crafts/boats and floating BOPs for domination of riverine area of IB
