Question : FAKE UNIVERSITY



(a) whether some fake universities are functioning in the country in which students are being exploited;

(b) if so, whether the Government had constituted a group of experts in 1998 to suggest measures against these fake institutions;

(c) if so, whether the said group has submitted its report; and

(d) if so, the details thereof and the action taken by the Government thereon

(a) to (d): Presently, University Grants Commission (UGC) has identified 15 Universities as fake which are functioning in violation of the UGC Act of 1956. the Government of India constituted a Task Force in 1998 to examine, inter-alia, the relevant provisions of the UGC Act and to suggest measures to provide suitable safeguards against the incidence of face Universities. The Task Force has since submitted its report proposing amendments to various provisions of UGC Act to tackle the problems of fake Univerisites effectively. Meanwhile, Malpractices Prevention Cell have been set up in the Government and under various apex bodies of education at the national level to keep a vigilant eye on various Malpractices in education including fake institutions/ Universities.
