Question : Purchase of Weapons

(a) whether the Government is in shortage of arms and ammunitions in case of a war and if so, the details thereof;

(b) the details of weapons shortlisted for purchase and the funds likely to be spent in this regard;

(c) whether the Government is of the opinion that this move will increase the army’s confidence and if so, the details thereof; and

(d) whether the Government has purchased new equipment from America and other friendly countries for the security of the country and if so, the details thereof?

(a) to (c): The authorisation and holding of arms and ammunition is as per operational requirement of the Armed Forces. Adequate reserves have been authorised to cater for contingencies. There is adequate stocks of arms and ammunition with the Armed Forces who are well equipped for meeting any operational requirements.
Making up of stock of arms and ammunition to desired level is a continuous process, the requirements for which are identified every year and procurements undertaken accordingly after following due procedure in Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP) and Defence Procurement Manual (DPM) and adequate budgetary provisions are made, accordingly.

(d) During the last three years, 62 contracts have been signed with foreign vendors including those from Russia, Israel, USA and France for procurement of defence equipment for Armed Forces.
