(a) & (b) Government is in the process of examining a scheme on Assured
career opportunities for talented science students.
(c), (d) & (e) There seems to be a declining interest among students to
take up science education. However, to attract exceptionally talented
students to science, the Department of Science & Technology has taken the
following major initiatives:
(i) Organisation of a National Children`s Science Congress all over
the country once a year.
(ii) Launching of an integrated Science Olympiad programme in the
country to ensure participation of nationally selected bright science
students in the international Science Olympiads in the subjects of
mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. Indian students have shown
outstanding performance in these events. India is also hosting the
international Chemistry Olympiad during 2001 at Mumbai.
(iii) Launching of the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana - a national
programme of fellowship to attract talented students to science as a career.
