Question : Cereal Based Cropping System

(a) whether the Government proposes to diversify cereal-based cropping system for improving the nutritional quality of cereals in diets;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the steps taken by the Government in this regard?

(a) to (c): Government of India is already implementing a Centrally Sponsored Scheme of National Food Security Mission (NFSM) for enhancing production and productivity of cereals like wheat, rice and coarse cereals including millets in identified States and districts of the country during 12th plan period. NFSM-rice is being implemented in 194 districts of 25 States, NFSM-wheat in 126 districts of 11 States and NFSM-coarse cereals in 265 districts of 28 States. Under the scheme, support is given the States for Demonstration of improved package of practices and distribution of certified seeds of newer varieties/ hybrids including nutritionally rich quality seeds of cereals. The millets which are rich source of minerals and popularly known as nutri-cereals are also promoted under NFSM-coarse cereals
