Question : DEMU Trains

(a) the total number of Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) trains in the country;

(b) whether the Railways has developed/manufactured the first ever air conditioned coach (car) for its DEMU trains and if so, the details thereof and the time by which the AC coaches are likely to be put into operation;

(c) the expenditure likely to be incurred for the manufacturing of the AC coaches;

(d) the number of trains and the time by which these are likely to be pressed into operation for passenger service in the first phase; and

(e) the other steps taken/being taken to manufacture railway assets under the ''Make in India'' programme?

(a): At present, 666 Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) trains are being run over Indian Railways.


(b) to (d): Yes, Madam. Indian Railways has made 8 Air-Conditioned DEMU coaches so far. Also, Indian Railways has manufactured partial AC DEMU trains with one or two AC DEMU coaches.
The cost of one Air conditioned Trailer Coach is ? 1.63 Crore.
These AC DEMU coaches are to be put into operation after necessary clearance of Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS).

(e): The following works under ‘Make in India’ are underway:-
1. Setting up of traction alternator manufacturing factory for high horse power diesel locomotives at Vidisha.
2. Augmentation of production capacity from 200 to 250 high horse power locos per year – facilities for fabrication of crank case for high horse power diesel locomotives at Diesel Locomotive Works, Varanasi.
3. Setting up of Forged Wheel Factory by Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited at Raebareli.
