Question : ACCIDENT AT VISHAKA STEEL PLANT



(a) whether any accident took place recently at Vishaka Steel Plant due to flow of liquid steel on the ground;

(b) if so, the details of human loss and capital damage caused thereby; and

(c) the remedial steps taken in this regard?

(a) Yes, sir. On 8th June, 2006, while casting liquid steel from the steel ladle to the Tundish, the slide gate mechanism failed due to which the ladle slide gate could not be closed. The balance liquid steel was filled in the emergency containers kept both at the casting platform and on the ground level.

(b) No injuries occurred to any person and there was no capital damage.

(c) The slide gate plate failure occurred due to the failure of the sliding plate and use of repaired plate is discontinued as a remedial action.
