Question : PARKING CHARGES



(a) whether the Government has any proposal to introduce a national parking policy for the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the local authorities like the Municipal Corporation of Delhi have already levied parking charges ranging from Rs. 4,000-10,000 on every new vehicle being registered in the National Capital Region and other States are also following the same;

(d) if so, the reasons for fresh levy of parking charges in colonies;

(e) whether the Government is likely to earmark specific place for parking as against the new parking charges levied; and

(f) if not, the reasons for levying parking charges at such high rates?

(a) & (b): No, Madam. However, it is governed by the National Urban Transport Policy, 2006.

(c): The matter concerns State Governments. So far as the NCT of Delhi is concerned, the Directorate of Local Bodies, Government of NCT of Delhi has informed that the parking charges ranging from Rs. 2000 to Rs.4500 are levied on every new vehicle registered through the Transport Department of the Government of NCT of Delhi in the three Delhi Municipal Corporations. However, no such parking charges are levied on Auto Rickshaws, Taxis, Two-wheelers and any State-owned agency vehicles.

(d): No such charges are levied in the colonies.

(e): No, Madam.

(f): The National Urban Transport Policy, 2006 envisages levy of a high parking fee to act as a transport demand management tool besides making the use of public transport more attractive.
