(a) whether the Government has established Mahila Shikshan Kendras (MSKs) for illiterate women;

(b) if so, the details thereof, State-wise;

(c) the total number of women benefited from such MSKs during each of the last three years, State-wise;

(d) whether the Government proposes to increase the number of MSKs in the country; and

(e) if so, the details in this regard?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) TO (e) OF LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO.391 FOR 23.08.2005 REGARDING MAHILA SHIKSHAN KENDRAS FOR ILLITERATE WOMEN ASKED BY SHRI ANANT GUDHE AND SHRI MADAN LAL SHARMA

Mahila Shikshan Kendras are opened under the central sector scheme of Mahila Samakhya to provide condensed courses and to create a cadre of educated and aware women in backward regions.

The number of Mahila Shikshan Kendras and the number of beneficiaries is given at Annexure.

8 additional Mahila Shikshan Kendras have been approved in the Annual Work Plans of State Mahila Samakhya Programmes for 2005-06.
