Question : EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN GUJARAT



(a) whether it is a fact that a large number of educational institutions like Primary, Secondary & Senior Secondary Schools, Colleges, IIT’s, Polytechnics etc. were destroyed in the devastating earthquake in Gujarat on 26th January, 2001;

(b) if so, the details in this regard;

(c) the number of educational institutions repaired/reconstructed so far; and

(d) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) to (d): As per the information available in the Ministry of Human Resource Development, the number of schools/colleges/institutions damaged in the earthquake in Gujarat on 26th January, 2001 are as under:

1.	Primary Schools	15653

2. Secondary/Higher Schools a)Govt. Schools 130 b)Non-Govt. Schools 1913

3. Colleges/Institutions 128

4. Technical Institutions 58

5. Primary Teachers Training Institutes a)Government 11 b)Non-Government 17 6. District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) 14



The Ministry released an assistance of Rs. 110.33 crores in this regard to the State of Gujarat by 31.3.2001, details of which are as follows:

3. All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) 5.45

4. Education Guarantee Scheme & Alternative 3.78 And Innovative Education (EGS&AIE)

5. Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan – SSA(Preparatory Activities) 0.50
Total: 110.33


Under the Gujarat School Reconstruction Programme, 40,300 classrooms have been repaired and 58 new classrooms have been constructed as on 31.12.2001. Also, repair/reconstruction work has been completed in 59 colleges.
