Question : Performance of Major Ports

(a) the details of Major Ports in the country along with
the performance thereof, port-wise;
(b) whether their performance has improved over the
years and if so, the details thereof and if not, the
reasons therefor;
(c) whether some of the Major Ports are facing shortage
of manpower;
(d) if so, the details thereof along with the reasons
therefor; and
(e) the steps taken/proposed to be taken by the
Government in this regard?

(a) There are 12 Major Ports in the country. Port-wise Performance during 2016-17 is given as under:

(c)to(e):Due to sufficiency in staffing and increase in mechanization and automation, the Major Port Trusts were advised to keep their establishment expenditure in check and not to go for further recruitments. In order to rationalize the workforce some Major Port Trusts have adopted Special Voluntary Retirement Scheme (SVRS). A Committee was constituted in December, 2016, to assess the human resource requirements of the Major Ports. Based on the recommendations of the Committee, the Major Port Trusts have been advised to go for recruitment for filling up the essential posts identified by the Committee.
