Question : Crash of Advanced Light Helicopter

(a) whether an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and a MIG-23 of Indian Air Force (IAF) have crashed recently;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the number of person / pilot killed / injured in these incidents;

(c) the quantum of losses to Indian Air Force along with the compensation paid to each injured and family of those killed in such accidents;

(d) whether the Government has constituted any inquiry in the matter and if so, the details thereof along with the outcome thereof; and

(e) the steps taken / being taken by the Government to avoid such recurrence of aircraft crash and replacement of fleet of old helicopters?

(a) & (b): An Advanced Light Helicopter and a MIG-23 aircraft of Indian Air Force have crashed on 04.07.2017 and 06.07.2017 respectively. Two pilots, one aircrew and one civilian policeman were killed in the helicopter crash.

(c) & (d): Courts of Inquiry have been constituted to investigate all aspects of these accidents including the quantum of loss to the Indian Air Force. Compensation is paid to the next of kin of the deceased pilots/aircrew as per extant rules.

(e) Indian Air Force has taken various preventive measures like invigoration of Aviation Safety Organisation, streamlining of accident/ incident reporting procedure, analytical studies and quality audit of the aircraft fleets. The ageing of aircraft is dealt with through proper maintenance, obsolescence management, upgrades and acquisition of new platforms. No aircraft which has completed its prescribed life is in operation in the IAF and every aircraft which is launched is fully airworthy.
