Question : Food Processing Industries

(a) the total number of food processing industries in the country at present along with the details thereof, State/UT-wise especially in regard to Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan;

(b) whether the Government is formulating any scheme or proposes to set up any new food processing unit in other States of the country including Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan; and

(c) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor?

(a): As per the latest Annual Survey of Industries, 2016-17 there are 39,748 registered food processing units/factories in the country. As per NSSO Survey, 2005-06, there are 24,59,929 number of unincorporated enterprises in the unorganized segment of food processing sector in the country. The State / UT-wise list of such units in the country including the States of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan is at Annexure-I.

(b) & (c): The Government is already implementing a Central Sector Umbrella scheme- PRADHAN MANTRI KISAN SAMPADA YOJANA (PMKSY) with a total outlay of Rs.6000 crore for the period 2016-20 coterminous with the 14th Finance Commission cycle with the following scheme components:

i. Mega Food Parks
ii. Integrated Cold Chain and Value Addition Infrastructure
iii. Creation / Expansion of Food Processing & Preservation Capacities
iv. Infrastructure for Agro-processing Clusters
v. Creation of Backward and Forward Linkages
vi. Food Safety and Quality Assurance Infrastructure
vii. Human Resources and Institutions

The Ministry is also implementing the scheme "Operation Greens" as a vertical of PMKSY since November, 2018 for integrated development of value chain of tomato, onion and potato (TOP) crops in selected States on pilot basis that includes the States of Gujarat and Maharashtra.



The schemes are demand driven. Financial assistance to the eligible applicant is provided as per the scheme guidelines against the Expression of Interest issued by the Ministry from time to time. Under these schemes, credit-linked capital subsidy in the form of grants-in-aid is provided to the individuals, farmers, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), Entrepreneurs, Cooperatives, Societies, Self Help Groups (SHGs), Private Companies and Central/ State PSUs etc. for setting up of food processing industries/ units/ projects.
