Question : Education relating to Nutrition for Children


(a) whether the Government has taken note of the innovations done in the introduction of
nutrition education from some organisations like Juvenate Well Being who are taking
forward their research in introduction of the nutrition education with the help of Ministry
of Women and Child Development in pre-schools/Anganwadis and if so, the details
thereof;
(b) whether the Government proposes to intropduce such education in schools across the
country from class I and if so, the steps taken/proposed to be taken by the Government in
this regard;
(c) whether the Government proposes some activity based learning for the tiny tots as a long
term plan to get rid of the problem of malnutrition and create health conscious citizens and
if so, the details thereof; and
(d) whether the Government proposes to take expertise from organizations like Juvenate Well
Being for preparing curriculum and implementing the same and if so, the details thereof?

(a) to (d): Content related to Health and Nutrition has been included in the textbooks of
Environmental Education at the primary stage. Topics related to nutrition have been incorporated
in Science textbooks developed by NCERT wherever possible where sources of food, nutrients
in food, deficiency of nutrients, balanced diet, nutritional needs of adolescents, etc. have been
discussed.
Under Mid Day Meal scheme all the States/UTs are encouraged to set up School
Nutrition (Kitchen) Garden to help in addressing malnutrition and micro nutrient deficiencies
among children, enhance the knowledge of children regarding nutritional aspects and give
children first-hand experience with nature and gardening.
