Question : NATIONAL ELECTRICITY POLICY



(a) whether the Confederation of Indian Industry is working to evolve a uniform national power tariff policy document for the promotion of healthy competition between power companies by giving the consumer the option to choose a supplier for quality power;

(b) if so, whether the CII has drafted a national electricity policy on the lines of its demands;

(c) whether the Centre has not yet spell out the details and the rules governing them; and

(d) if so, the time by which the Government are in a position to provide rules governing this Act?

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF POWER ( SHRIMATI JAYAWANTI MEHTA )

(a) to (d) : Under Section 3(1) of the Electricity Act, 2003, the Central Government shall, from time to time, prepare the National Electricity Policy and tariff policy, in consultation with the State Governments and the Central Electricity Authority. The consultation process has been initiated. Under section 79 of the Act, the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) shall advise the Central Government in the formulation of tariff policy. The advice of CERC has been received.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has prepared a preliminary paper and suggestions on Tariff Policy.
