Question : CONTROL OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES



(a) whether any action plan for the control of infectious diseases is on between India and America;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the benefit likely to accrue thereby to both the countries?

(a)&(b): A Joint Statement on Expansion of Indo-US Cooperation on emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases and diseases surveillance was signed on 27th November, 1997. This Joint Statement was regarding collaboration between both the countries for an initial period of five years. This Statement is likely to be extended for an extension of another five years.

The areas of collaboration identified were:

1.	Training of surveillance officers and other critical personnel.	2.	Expert consultation.	3.	Laboratory strengthening.	4.	Collaborative research	5.	Collaboration on disease outbreak response.


(c): The benefits expected to accrue to both the countries are improved technical assistance and training as well as increased collaboration in the fields of outbreak investigations, training, laboratory strengthening and research.
