Question : EXPORT OF SUGAR



(a) whether the Government are contemplating on export of sugar; (

(b) if so, the quantity and the rate of exported sugar, country-wise; and (

(c) the scheme/programme being formulated by the Government to enhance sugar production in sugar producing areas alongwith the proposed financial assistance to be given to each State for this purpose during 2000-2001?

(a) & (b) : Due to low level of prices prevailing in the international market, the export of sugar is not economically . However, export of sugar against preferential quotas of EEC & USA and a small quantity of sugar to Nepal under bi-lateral Indo-Nepal Treaty of Trade, is being undertaken.
(c ) Government of India is providing financial assistance to the sugar mills from Sugar Development Fund (SDF) on soft terms for their sugarcane development and Modernisation/ Rehabilitation schemes. As on 31.12.1999, the amounts of Rs. 414.33 crores for cane-development in 611 cases and Rs. 889.93 crores for modernisation in 206 cases have been disbursed from Sugar Development Fund.
