Question : Financial Assistance to Projects of Classical Language

(a) the details of the Indian languages which have been awarded the status of classical language;

(b) whether the Government has implemented any scheme for providing financial assistance to the various projects of classical language and if so, the details thereof;

(c) the language-wise details of the funds provided to each classical language during the last three years;

(d) whether the Government has received any proposal regarding projects of classical language during the last three years; and

(e) if so, the details thereof and the reaction of the Government thereon?

(a) : Six Indian Languages namely Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Odia have been accorded the status of Classical Language.

(b) to (e) : Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) works for the promotion of all Indian languages including four classical languages namely Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam and Odia. Development and promotion of Classical Tamil is done by Central Institute of Classical Tamil (CICT). Sanskrit is promoted by Central Sanskrit University, New Delhi.

The details of funds provided for various classical languages is given below:

Funds are provided to Central Sanskrit University for their normal functioning which includes for promotion of Sanskrit language. Classical Malayalam and Classical Odia centres are recently established . No other proposal received in respect of Classical Language .
