(a) The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM)
has released in India in July 2000 its report on `Progress
of the Worldâs Women 2000â, which is the first edition of a
biennial report. The report is a global assessment of the
worldâs women from mid 1980s to the late 1990s, and focuses
on economic dimensions of gender equality and womenâs
empowerment, and assesses womenâs progress using indicators.
It also raises issues of government and corporate
accountability. Its future vision includes womenâs entering
and transforming financial markets (e.g. micro-credit),
markets for goods and services and transforming economic
policy making etc. No suggestion specific or exclusive to
India has been made in the report . However while
discussing specific issues, case studies and practices in
India have been cited.
