Question : POLLUTION CAUSED BY OSWAL FERTILIZERS COMPANY



(a) whether the Government are aware of high pollution of surroundings and dangerous/alarming condition of the environment created by Oswal Fertilizers Company at Paradeep (orissa);

(b) if so, the details of the same upto date;

(c) the action taken by the Government to make it pollution and danger free; and

(d) the punitive action taken against the said company?

(a) & (b) The Government is awrare of the environmental pollution problem being caused by M/s Oswal Chemicals & Fertilizers Ltd. at Paradeep. The monitoring of nearby water bodies has revealed that the adjoining creek and the Nallah leading to river Mahanadi, have been contaminated with acid, fluoride and phosphate by discharges and seepages from the industry.

(c) Directions have been issued to the industry to take adequate pollution control measures and stop all kinds of effluent discharge from the plant.

(d) A criminal case has been filed on 17.03.2001 by the Orissa Pollution Control Board against the industry for violation of Section 25 of the water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. Further, a show cause notice has been issued on 26.5.2002 with an intention to issue direction under Section 33(A) of the water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974.
