Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF OVERSEAS INDIAN AFFAIRS & MINISTER OF CIVIL AVIATION ( SHRI VAYALAR RAVI )

(a) to (d): Government of India has granted “in-principle” approval to M/s Bengal Aerotropolis Project Ltd. (BAPL) for setting up of a greenfield airport at Andal-Faridpur blocks of Barddhaman District in West Bengal in December, 2008 for domestic operations.

(e): M/s BAPL has informed that they expect operations to start for different parts of country like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Guwahati, Bagdogra, etc. from the proposed airport. However, Government of India has laid down Route Dispersal Guidelines (RDG) with a view to achieve better regulation of air transport services taking into account the need for air transport services of different regions of the country including north east region. It is up to the airlines to provide air services to specific places depending upon the traffic demand and commercial viablity.

(f): The construction of the airport has already been started with completion date by 2012.
