Question : ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION



(a) the schemes, plans and programmes of the Government for environmental conservation in the country;

(b) the places in the country where environmental conservation is in a critical stage;

(c) the areas in the country which need more attention and not being given the same along with the reasons therefore; and

(d) the steps being taken in this regard and for achieving sustainable development in the country?

a)to c) In compliance with the vision and mission for protection of environment, various schemes and projects are being implemented by the Government supported by legislative and administrative measures. The Ministry has rationalised Schemes in Twelfth Plan by suitable merger, thereby reducing the total number of thematic schemes from 22 to 18, comprising of 5 Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS) and 13 Central Sector schemes. The notable among these schemes focusing on environmental conservation in the country as per the places identified under these Schemes namely include Assistance to Botanical Gardens, Taxonomy Capacity Building, National Natural Resource Management Scheme (NNRMS), Research & Development in Environment, Conservation of corals and mangroves, Biosphere Reserves, National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Eco-Systems (NPCA), Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats and Biodiversity conservations.

d) So far as achieving sustainable development in the country is concerned, the XII Five Year Plan has the objective of achieving “faster, more inclusive and sustainable growth.” In this regards, Ministry is undertaking a number of reforms measures and policy initiatives in order to facilitate sustainable development.
