Question : Opening of IITs and IIMs

(a) whether the Government, keeping in view the increasing demand,
proposes to open more Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian
Institutes of Management (IIMs) institutions in the country, particularly in
Uttar Pradesh;
(b) if so, the details thereof, State-wise and location-wise; and
(c) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) to (c): Government has established six (6) new IITs one each at Tirupati
(Andhra Pradesh), Jammu (J&K), Bhilai (Chhattisgarh), Goa (Goa), Palakkad
(Kerala), Dharwad (Karnataka) and six (6) new IIMs at Amritsar (Punjab),
Bodhgaya (Bihar), Nagpur (Maharashtra), Sambalpur (Odisha), Sirmaur
(Himachal Pradesh), and Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) during 2014-15
and 2015-16. Two IITs, namely IIT-Kanpur and IIT(BHU) Varanasi and one IIM
at Lucknow are already functioning in the State of Uttar Pradesh. At present,
there is no proposal to establish more IITs and IIMs in the country.
