(a) whether the Government has carried out construction or maintenance work of public libraries in the country including Gujarat during the last three years;
(b) if so, the State-wise amount and details of funds spent for this purpose; and
(c) the area-wise number and details of public libraries in Gujarat at present?

(a) Library is a state subject and public Libraries in States/Union Territories function under the administrative control of the respective State/Union Territory authority. However, Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation, Kolkata, an autonomous organization under Ministry of Culture provides financial assistance to public libraries under its ‘Matching Scheme’ of ‘Assistance to Public Libraries towards increasing Accommodation’ on the basis of applications recommended by the respective State Library Authorities.
National Knowledge Commission, established in 2005, constituted a working group on Libraries which recommended setting up a National Mission on Libraries (NML) and under the subcomponent “Upgradation of Infrastructure” of NML Model Library scheme, financial assistance is provided for infrastructural development of public libraries.
(b) The details of fund sanctioned for the purpose by Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation, Kolkata is at Annexure I and by National Mission on Libraries is at Annexure II.
(c) The Ministry of Culture does not maintain details of any public library in the State of Gujarat.
