Question : EMPLOYMENT GENERATION IN FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRIES



(a) the amount spent on the Food Processing Industries in the Tenth Five Year Plan;

(b) the number of people to whom employment has been provided in the industry 2006-07 and likely to be provided in 2007-08 separately;

(c) whether any target for creation and jobs has been fixed for the said period and the measures taken to achieve this target; and

(d) if so, the details thereof?

(a): An amount of Rs.489.82 crores has been spent on various Plan Schemes for the promotion of food processing industries in the Tenth Five Year Plan.

(b): As far as large and medium scale industries in food processing sector are concerned, based on the Industrial Entrepreneurs Memorandum(IEMs) and Letters of Intent (LOIs)/Direct Industrial Licenses (DILs) filed with the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, the proposed employment during 2006 has been around 31665. As regards food processing industries in Small Scale sector, according to information available, the employment in the food processing units during 2005-06 for which latest figures are available is estimated to be around 42.87 lakhs.

(c) & (d) : No specific target for creation of jobs has been fixed for the years 2006-07 and 2007-08. However, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries has finalized Vision 2015 on Food Processing Industries which envisages cluster based and demand driven farming, achieving integration of food processing infrastructure from farm to market and promoting a dynamic food processing industry which could result in trebling the size of the processed food sector by increasing the level of processing of perishables from 6% to 20%, value addition from 20% to 35% and share in global food trade from 1.5% to 3% by 2015. Government has identified strategies along with a detailed action plan to realize the Vision 2015. The realization of the Vision 2015 is expected to generate 1.8 million direct and 6.4 million indirect employment.
