Question : Central Transport Policy

Will the Minister of URBAN DEVELOPMENT be pleased to state :

(a) whether the Government proposes to introduce a Central Transport Policy;

(b) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor; and

(c) the manner in which the Government proposes to promote public transport in the country?

(a): No, Madam.

(b)&(c): The matters related to various modes of transport viz., Roadways, Railways, Waterways and Airways etc. are dealt by different Ministries/Departments of Government of India as per ‘the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules’. Ministry of Road Transport & Highways have informed that the Ministry has introduced a scheme w.e.f. 15-03-2010 to provide financial assistance to States for strengthening public transport system in the country. The scheme envisages assistance for introduction of Information Technology such as Global Positioning System (GPS)/Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) based vehicle tracking system, electronic ticket vending machines etc. Ministry of Urban Development has issued National Urban Transport Policy, 2006 which encourages greater use of public transport and non-motorised modes in urban areas.
