The domestic production/availability of foodgrains is adequate to meet the domestic demand except in case of pulses. In case of pulses Government supplements the domestic production through imports to meet the demand.

The domestic demand for foodgrains has been estimated to be 245-252 million tonnes in the terminal year of the 12th Five Year Plan (i.e. 2016-17).

Government is implementing various programmes/schemes viz. Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), National Food Security Mission (NFSM), Pradhan Mantri Krishi Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), Integrated Scheme on Oilseeds, Pulses, Oil Palm & Maize (ISOPOM), National Project on Organic Farming (NPOF), Bringing Green Revolution to Eastern India (BGREI) etc. with the objective of increasing production and productivity of Foodgrains including pulses.
