Question : New Centres of Theatre Schools

(a) whether the Government is formulating any plan to open new centres of theatre schools including the prestigious National School of Drama in different parts of the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof particularly of Maharashtra;

(c) the details of the syllabus and the number of seats in each course of the National School of Drama in Delhi and other cities;

(d) whether the Government has taken steps to promote theatre in regional languages in the country including Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan; and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

(a) & (b) Government is exploring the possibility of opening regional centers of National School of Drama (NSD). Ministry has directed NSD to study the feasibility of opening new centers and submit a proposal.

(c) NSD conducts 3 years Post Graduate Diploma in Dramatic Arts at New Delhi with 26 students every year. The details of Syllabus are as under:

In the first year, basics of Acting, Design, Direction, Theatre History, Literature & Aesthetics are taught in detail. In the second year, students do the specialization in the Theatre History, Literature & Aesthatics, Acting, Direction, Theatre Techniques and Design. In the third year, students get advanced training in their area of specialization like Acting, Direction, Theatre Techniques and Design.

NSD offers one year certificate courses in their four regional centres with an intake capacity of 20 students at each centre. The details are as under;

(d) & (e) Yes Sir. NSD holds various festivals like Bharat Rang Mahotsav, Poorvottar Rashtriya Festival, Pragjyotish Festival, Jashn-e-bachpan/Bal Sangam festival, National Tribal festival of Dance, Music, Folk & Theatre and organizes theatre Training workshops across the country in different local/regional languages for the promotion of theatre in the country. In 2017, Classical Theatre Festival was held in Maharashtra and in 2018, Theatre Olympics was held at Mumbai, Maharashtra & Jaipur, Rajasthan.
