(a) the efforts made by the Government to popularise the Unani system of Medicines;

(b) the achievements made so far in this regard;

(c) the number of Unani Hospitals/dispensaries in the country so far, State-wise;

(d) whether any State Government has requested the Union Government for establishment of Unani Hospitals and dispensaries;

(e) if so, names of those States; and

(f) the decisions taken by the Government thereon?

An independent department for the Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy was established to look after the development and propagation of six systems of medicine, which includes the Unani system. The key thrust areas identified for the development of this system include:-


ú Improvement in the facilities of under-graduate and post-graduate institutions in State colleges.

ú Establishment of a National Institute for Unani Medicine to be functional from the academic session 2003-2004

ú Impetus given for setting up herbal gardens and taking up cultivation of Medicinal Plants used in the preparation of drugs.

ú Issue of Essential Drugs List for Unani Medicine for stocking in the Unani hospitals and dispensaries.

ú 5 Unani medicines have been included in the Reproductive and Child Health Programme of Family Welfare.

ú Encouragement given to facilitate Drugs Standardization and Quality Control.

ú Encouraging intra-mural and extra-mural research on various aspects of Unani Medicine. The achievement include :-

- Identification of significant leads for the treatment of chronic diseases like Vitiligo, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Eczema, Bronchial Asthma and Filariasis.

- Development of phramacopocial standards for single and compound drugs.


- Ethno-pharmacological surveys for collection and identifications of plants used in the Unani System.

- Editing, complication and translation of rare Unani manuscripts.

There are 308 Unani Hospitals and 963 Unani dispensaries in the country. A state-wise list is annexed.


The health is a state subject and opening of hospitals / dispensaries is primarily the responsibility of the State Governments. The State Governments provide the facilities in their States based on the felt needs of the people of the area and their resources. The Central Government is facilitating procument of ISM/Unani medicines in the hospitals and dispensaries through the Pradhan Mantri`s Gramodaya Yojana.
