Question : Demand-Supply Gap of Water

(a) whether the demand of pure andsafe drinking water does not meet thesupply of estimated demand in thecountry;
(b) if so, the demand and supply ofdrinking water, State/season-wise;
(c) action taken by the Governmentto fill up the demand-supply gap and itspresent status thereof; and
(d) the action proposed to supplypure and safe water to the people of thecountry and the action plan in this regard?

(a) & (b) Water is a State subject. The Ministry of Jal Shakti does not maintain the data ondemand and supply of Drinking Water. However, under National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP) the current norm for providing safe drinking water supply to the rural population is 40 liters per capita per day.

(c)& (d) The State Governments are mandated to plan design fund and implement the water supply schemes to meet the demand for drinking water. Ministry of Jal Shakti supplements the efforts of States for providing water supply in rural areas. Under NRDWP, the Ministry provides technical and financial assistance to the States for improving the coverage of providing safe drinking water in rural areas.
